Mary, Did You Know?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters? Did you know
That your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered
Will soon deliver you.

‘Tis the season for sizzling hot chocolate, crisp weather, the fragrant smells of holiday cookies and eclectic holiday playlists. Now, we all have that one song we start playing November 1st. For most of us, it’s a very particular Mariah Carey song that shall remain unnamed… It’s comical how we listen to that song more in a two month span than some of the other songs all year. We listen to these songs because they remind us of our personal reason for the season whether it be family and fun or love, joy, peace or hope. For some “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” reminds us to be extra good so Santa doesn’t put coal in our stocking. For others “Silent Night” reminds us of the birth and the genesis of the promised Messiah. Whether it’s “Jingle Bells”, “Joy to the World”, or “Feliz Navidad”, these songs have a meaning personal to you. For the past few years, “Mary Did You Know” has been personal a holiday anthem and also a song of profound revelation and reflection. Here’s three reminders, three truths, three pathways to freedom, to reflect on from the song “Mary Did You Know?” Consider how this song could inspire you to walk differently this Christmas season.

  1. God Knows You. Jesus is such a perfect example of God ordaining and instilling purpose, character, personality, and gifts well before the beginning of time. Psalm 139:13 reads, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.” Mary may have known in part who her son was and what he was to accomplish, but even she could not grasp the depths of who God created the Son to be. Mary had to learn what God already know. The same is for you. Only God knows exactly what He put inside of you. All you have to do is turn to Him and learn from Him.

  2. God is Big. Through Jesus Christ, people that could not walk, walked. People that could not see, saw. People that needed saving were saved. The truth is, there is nothing too big for God — not even a raging thunderstorm. Matthew 8:27 reads, “The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” He spoke everything into existence according to His good will and pleasure.

  3. God is Great. Jesus sent His son to be a healer. He is the spotless lamb, the perfect sacrifice for our sins. He is Lord of all, He is Ruler, but He is also walked among us. In all of his greatness, the beauty of the Lord is, He walked this earth, he felt what we felt, and in His love, grace, and mercy, he died for our sins. He died to make us sons and daughters. Phillipians 2:5-11 reads, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing  by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

This holiday season, reflect on these truths daily. Remind yourself that though your family may know you, God knows you best. Encourage yourself through the difficulties of this season that God is bigger than what may appear impossible to us. Lastly, find joy in knowing that God is great and through Him you can experience his greatness at work. If you are ready to experience all of who God is, today may be the day you surrender your life to the Lord. Say this prayer with me and begin your journey today!

“Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner and I need a Saviour. I believe you you sent your son Jesus, to take my place on the cross. To die to be buried, and to rise again so my relationship with you can be restored. I believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord therefore I am saved and I am a child of God. In Jesus name, Amen.”

Merry Christmas everyone. I truly hope you find peace, hope, love, joy and REST this year.

Love,

Ashli
