It’s the Small Things…

Anchor Scripture || Song of Solomon 2:15

Catch all the foxes, those little foxes, before they ruin the vineyard of love, for the grapevines are blossoming! 15 Then you must protect me from the foxes, foxes on the prowl, Foxes who would like nothing better than to get into our flowering garden.

I want to share with you guys a word that — or shall I say a phrase —- that I’ve heard several times in the past few months.

“It the little foxes that spoils the vine.”

Context || This scripture was written to warn two lovers not to allow small things to have a considerable impact on their relationship. Though the passage was written for lovers, the principle is transferable to other areas including our relationship with ourselves, diet and health.

Backstory || A few week ago, I went to a riveting nutrition seminar to learn more about my passion for dietary health. I met a fantastic team of dietitians, enjoyed a delicious lunch from CAVA and had a great discussion with the other attendees. Though most of the information was familiar, I was piqued when I learned that I had a lot to learn about label reading. To be transparent, I don’t buy a lot of shelf items which saves me to the headache of having to read labels. If I do, I check for clean ingredients and any red flags on the nutrition label. Well…I learned that I missed the mark and was eating an unrecommended level of saturated fat from eating microwave popcorn and get this, plain whole milk greek yogurt. Now this is not a ploy to tell you to get rid of either items, but to check your labels! If the saturated fat levels are higher than 5% per serving, that can have a negative impact on your cholesterol levels. It’s such a small detail, but it has a big impact in the long run.

Lesson Learned || Sometimes, you don’t know what you don’t know and that’s OKAY. Whenever I am faced with something new, I constantly have to remind myself to be kind and gentle to myself. The truth is little things make the biggest differences but instead of what could have been, I choose to focus on what will be. I swapped out the Whole Milk Greek Yogurt for the Nonfat version and now, I know my cholesterol levels will stabilize. Is there something seemingly small you could exchange to witness a big result? Perhaps swapping sodas for sparkling water or white potatoes for sweet potatoes? Maybe you can try eating fruit instead of that doughnut. The choice is up to you! Catch those little habits and enjoy the reward of preserving what God has blessed you with.
